This retelling, though, is told from the perspective of a Black man, Tommy Tester, the titular Black Tom. It is a retelling of Lovecraft’s short story The Horror at Red Hook, published in 1927. I previously reviewed Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, which is Lovecraft inspired, but today I wanted to feature The Ballad of Black Tom by Victor LaValle.
