It was so thrilling, particularly since books that are considered funny aren't always considered for top prizes. Then we waited, sweaty palmed, at an awards ceremony at UCLA to hear our names called. ![]() Then we all attended a cocktail party in New York. How did that news get delivered to you and what was your reaction? TL: Congratulations on being named the first recipient of the LA Times YA Award for Rules of the road. Thankfully, the talented and humorous Joan Bauer provided more, much more for readers like me who craved laughter along with a good story. As a longtime lover of the sitcom, of the absurd, of bad jokes, I despaired about the field of YA literature. Humor - it is out there in abundance in books for younger readers but is in terribly short supply for middle and high school students. ![]()
